Smart Marketing
“Mass marketing can reach millions; smart marketing feels like it works on one customer at a time”. – The Age of Persuassion, How Marketing Ate Our Culture by Terry O’Reilly & Mike Tenant.
Smart marketing is not an oxymoron. Far from it.
But smart doesn’t always mean clear or easy to understand. The Direct marketing industry in particular is saturated with jargon that does little to reveal the benefits of what ‘direct marketing’ can do for customers. Every industry is susceptible to this. But the irony for any company involved in marketing that does not articulate itself well lies in the fact that messaging and communication is supposed to be what we do.
That’s why in this blog we want to talk about smart marketing.
Marketing that ‘feels like it works on one customer at a time’. Mass marketing speaks for itself – it’s personified in the ubiquitous messaging blossoming around us like a field of Dutch tulips. But smart marketing, that takes…well…smarts.
Hopefully we can reveal some ‘smart’ nuggets here. It might be explaining a simple idea or term or it might be discussing a great big idea. In either case, we’ll strive to frame the discussion in plain terms, make the language accessible, and keep the content relevant.
The goal is to help you, the reader, make smart marketing decisions and hopefully feel entertained in the process – one post at a time.

I too am a big fan of The Age of Persuasion. Between that and the Vinyl Cafe, CBC Radio is the best station ever =).
I’m looking forward to seeing the blog develop!

If you like the show, you would probably like Terry’s blog @ terryoreilly.ca… I would also be remiss if I didn’t add Ideas to that list of great CBC programming.
